U2 Glasgow 2009 Review

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

I don’t qualified to write a review of this awesome gig but I need to give it a shot.

Seeing U2 play live is always going to be a treat but with their most recent album receiving mixed reviews, this maybe POPmart revisted.  Their choice of openning track, Breathe was an interesting one, but after seeing it performed – all doubts are removed.   It’s an excellent choice – full of intelligent lyrics and energy provided buy a drum-groove and a half from Larry and another killer riff from The Edge.

The tunes that open the night are all from the new album No Line on the Horizon, which I love and will defend to the hilt but not for its sing-along qualities and this probably gave the show a slow start and considering Glasvegas were the warm-up we were already at a snails pace!  The new songs do sound incredible live and are complimented by great graphics from the huge screen that is wrapped around the 360 degree stage.

Once U2 got into playing their classics the crowd went suitably crazy, I watched from the stands and really wished I was down on the pitch to really get a feel for the atmosphere.  The band managed to mix in some of their newer and older songs between the now classic songs from All That You Can’t Leave Behind and How To Dismantle and Atomic Bomb.  Hearing Unforgettable Fire was a real treat and it was interesting to see how similar to the songs from the new album it sounded.

Their 2 hour set flew by, and was wrapped up with a 3 track encore.  All in all a great night.
