Holiday in Bruges – Review

Friday, July 17th, 2009

I’m sure with this film it’s one of those that people either love or hate, who’d want to watch a film about two Irish hitmen going to Belgium awaiting their boss’s contact for a ‘job’. Now, when I say it’s about that, it isn’t really it seems more about the differences between the two men, how one is a jack the lad and the other more calm, reserved and old fashioned. Ray (Colin Farrell star of Ballykissangel) gets bored of waiting and ends up getting drunk every night, and having a coke session with a “midget” and his drug dealer. Ken is the sensible one of the two, he’s almost acting as Ray’s baby sitter..

There’s not a huge amount I can write about this film, it wasn’t terrible enough to make me want to write pages upon pages of scathing remarks. I did love the film, some points were brilliantly funny, the dialogue between Ken and Ray is witty, entertaining and almost made me cry with laughter at points. The real star of the show, however, was Bruges itself, it really made the film what it is. The stunning medieval architecture, the old streets and canals, it was really beautiful and part of me thinks it was aimed to get more tourists in to Bruges. Normally after watching a great film I’ll think ‘Man, I have to buy this!’ with In Bruges I thought ‘Man, I need to go on holiday there!’

Definitely a film to watch if you’re in the mood to just sit back, chill out and watch something amusing, not a huge amount of thinking required for this one. Funny Stuff!
