Google Wave – nothing new under the sun

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

The whole internet appears to be up in arms about Google Wave.  I have to admit that it looks awesome (and I WANT an invite), but the main thing that people are going nuts for is something that I used to use online back in 1995.

The ability to chat with people by typing, in real-time, is not new.  Those of us net users that are old enough to remember the many BBS systems that flooded the internet “back in the day” got used to this idea quite some time ago.

These BBS systems still exist and all you need to do access them is get hold of a telnet client and choose from one of the many BBS’ available.  I certainly haven’t the inclination to get involved in another social networking environment (even if it’s the ultimate in retro cool) but if you want an education in where facebook, bebo etc evolved from I recommend you head over to this site and get yourself learning!

Newspapers – why read a newspaper?

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Even though I cannot resist a smutty headline, for last few weeks I have been reading an “intellectual” newspaper,  although newspapers print yesterdays news,  I think they a better read than most news websites?

I have found that the quality of writing makes a newspaper a more efficient way of reading the news.  I have also found newspapers to be a much more enjoyable way of finding out what is going on in the world.  Usually I click the BBC News short-cut on my Blackberry to catch-up but now I would much rather spend 20 minutes with one of the broadsheets (and a coffee).

I have been a huge evangelist for online news and espeically the blogging/tweeting culture that has made news infitately more instant than even more network news sites but reading a newspaper is just plain nicer!

I have started to miss my subscription to a newspaper and I am thinking about starting it up again (even though the cost, although not huge, is a consideration).

Do you read a newspaper, which one? Do you think you would buy a newspaper if it was available on something like the Kindle?
