X-Men Origins Review

 wolverine_origins_usa_today

I have to come clean and admit that I am not a comic book geek, or even a movie geek ( I will leave that to Cam) but I do like a good movie, especially one that doesn’t require too much thought.

The x-men series has been a favourite in my household, if I remember rightly my copy of the first movie was given to me by the aforementioned movie geek, so I was really looking forward to this episode to be released, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The movie starts out by explaining how the relationship between Wolverine (know at this stage in the movie as Jimmy) and Sabretooth (aka Victor). The plot develops quickly, and if you are worried that you may get bored and bogged down in an epic family saga, you have no need to worry because this movie delivers all the action at a high pace right from the outset!

As the story thickens we are given insights into the Weapon X project and to the formative years of some of the key players from the X-Men (Gambit is currently my favourite).

I thought the film lacked some of the previous movies tech/geek/futuristic cool but it made up for it in content and storyline (I am waiting to be massacred for that comment). I will definitely watch this again when it comes out on DVD but I am not going to be rushing back to see it again on the big screen.

    Here comes the massacre!

Were you watching the same film as me?

For me, the film appeared to have been written in two stages. First of all, it was written as a completely stand-alone movie with no real reference to the future X-Men franchise films. In this respect, it’s a fairly good movie, with some great effects (apart from Sabretooth’s “cat” running, which is pants).

But then, about 15-minutes before the end, someone somewhere put their hand up and said, “Hang about! Doesn’t X-Men follow on from this film? Doesn’t Wolverine have no memory?”

“Damn it!”, says the director. “What can we do to fix this, the biggest of several, gaping plot holes?”.

With a few seemingly random events, we manage to close this hole – but leave so many others open that the entire film is now out of place in the series.

Just some of my unanswered questions:

    1. Why is Stryker over 6′ tall when, in X2, he’ 5′6″
    2. Why doesn’t Sabretooth’s appearance change for 200 years; then, in less than 20, he grows almost a foot in height and 2-feet of hair?
    3. Why doesn’t Cyclops know Wolverine in X1?
    4. Where do all the kids that Xavier picks up go in later films?
    5. If Logan and Victor don’t age, how did they go from child to adult?

The film had loads of potential that was, IMO, wasted. Ryan Reynolds character had bags of potential – far more than Will.I.Am. Why didn’t we see more?

All in all, I was happy with the film as long as I didn’t think about it.
But, for die hard fans of the franchise, there will be heartache.

I like that in my movies though… I openly admit I am a fan of bad movies!

PS – before you ask, yes I am looking forward to Angels and Demons!

    As people age they shrink

    2. Why doesn’t Sabretooth’s appearance change for 200 years; then, in less than 20, he grows almost a foot in height and 2-feet of hair?

It is slowly changing, it starts with physical ability then begins to manifest in physical changes.. his hands for example. Due to the fact he ages very slowly the mutation takes longer.

    3. Why doesn’t Cyclops know Wolverine in X1?

    Good question

    4. Where do all the kids that Xavier picks up go in later films?

Huh? They are in his school

    5. If Logan and Victor don’t age, how did they go from child to adult?

The Mutation does not happen until puberty, since Logan and Victor age so much slower the mutation was / is stretched out over a longer period of time.

Well, mystery solved on DataMouse’s ‘question’ number 3. Cyclops never actually sees Logan.. never even hears his name. Thus no reason to remember him in X1

As far as the rest of yur comments after seeing the Movie again I dont think you really paid all that much attention to it LOL It not only fits right into the rest of the franchise but it does answer many questions
